about

By far the oldest song on the album (October 1996: written in a hotel room in Greensboro, NC), I always wanted to write additional verses, but they never materialized. The vocal rhyme-scheme is an example of a technique that the band Idaho (Jeff Martin) sometimes employs; where the last word of a line is actually the first word of the next line. It has a proper name, but I can't recall... (see "Postcards From The Future".

I also think of Chris Whitley (RIP), one of my favourite writers, whom I had the opportunity to see perform 3 times, and actually hung out with once. On his album Terra Incognita, the opening track "As Flat As The Earth" is one verse. However, witnessing him live, we all learned that the song does in fact have 2 additional verses & they are just as delicious...

I later thought it would be a good idea if other songwriters each contributed a verse, adding to the piece & making it 10+ minutes: a real story-telling/folk-ballad. Perhaps one day...

lyrics

V1) Hindsight is the best sight,
But now it's a little late.
An undisputable fact of epic proportions,
That only fills me up with...
Hate the days of future past,
Go for three, the lead won't last.
Make the call that's tough to fake,
Lives will change and hearts will only...
Break the fall of something new,
Looking back through I.O.U.'s.
Seems I've hit the wall again,
The car won't make it this time, my friend.
